Family Dynamics: Clients and their Advisors talk about Business, Family, and Legacy
Things often get messy when the family is involved. Two clients, one from an operating business and one from a family foundation, will discuss, along with their advisors, their experience in planning and executing major transitions for the family, the business and the foundation. This distinguished panel will present their perspectives on the challenges, pitfalls and successes as they moved forward in their work together.

(1) History of working with their advisor and the timeline of this work; (2) In the family business case: The expectations, goals going in and what the client wanted to achieve; (3) How major issues were resolved: the formation of a board of directors for the family business, estate planning for the family and succession planning for the business; (4) In the family foundation case: the history of the foundation and the current refined vision for the foundation going forward; (5) Why communication within the family is key to good planning; (6) The challenges to the client/advisor relationship; (7) What the clients learned about the role of their advisors; (8) Clients’ advice to advisors and the importance of education of the family about governance, family dynamics and strategic planning and (9) Why it is important to have advisors collaborate as a team, with a “quarterback” to guide the process. Moderated By: Gerard J. Donnellan, PhD Speaker: Advisor: Keith Whitaker, Ph.D. Dr. Whitaker is a teacher who sees education as core to counsel.
Dr. Whitaker is President of Wise Counsel Research, a charity he founded, and a consultant with Wise Counsel LLC, which educates leaders in the wise use of resources.
Dr. Whitaker has served as a Managing Director at Wells Fargo Family Wealth, a philosophy professor at Boston College, a trustee, and a director of a private foundation.
Dr. Whitaker’s writings and commentary have appeared in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, The Financial Times, and Philanthropy Magazine. His Wealth and the Will of God appeared this year from Indiana University Press.
Dr. Whitaker holds a Ph.D. in Social Thought from the University of Chicago and a BA and MA in Classics and Philosophy from Boston University.
Speaker 2: Client: Lisa Kirby-Gibbs; F.M. Kirby Foundation Lisa Kirby Gibbs is the CEO and a Trustee of the Kirby Foundation: a foundation she manages with her four siblings. Lisa uses her training as a Marriage and Family Therapist, and decades of consulting in the corporate world as a career management and leadership coach to consult to Family Foundations and Family Businesses regarding family process issues, such as: role definition, conflict resolution, leadership development, and transition planning. Having earned a B.A from Colorado College, a M.A. in Counseling Psychology from Lesley College, Lisa also received extensive training in Family and Systems Theory. Lisa also owns a successful office business center in Westborough, MA.Speaker 3: Advisor: Sandra V. Geller; Geller & Lehmann LLC Sandi Geller is a co-founding partner of Geller and Lehmann LLC (GL), the Financial Planning arm of Cooper & Lehmann, LLP. Sandi heads up the Boston office of GL where she focuses on financial planning and investment oversight for multi-generational families of wealth and privately held business exit strategy projects. Herself a second generation family business owner, Sandi began her career working in her parent's family business over 25 years ago and now manages the family-office. Sandi moved to the USA with her husband, Dan in 1987 and soon after that began consulting to families and family owned enterprises. Sandi received her Bachelors in Science at the South Australian Institute of Technology, her post-graduate masters degree from John's Hopkins University, Baltimore MD. and her Certification in Financial Planning in early 2000.

The company employs 650 people at over 70 locations in two states.
John is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame and received his MBA (finance) from Syracuse University. He is a Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU). In 1981 John began his career in the insurance industry which grew after multiple mergers and acquisitions into a closely held corporation with 19 locations throughout upstate New York and North Carolina. Mirabito Holdings Inc. was formed in 1998, through the combination of a number of businesses, including the Insurance company, the Mirabito Energy Products company (the existing multi-generational family business), Quickway Convenience Stores and the Old Road Truck Repair, Inc..
John is a member of many civic and community organizations including the Binghamton University Athletic Club, the Community Foundation of South Central New York and the Rotary Club. He is Trustee for The Mirabito Family Philanthropic Foundation, which is dedicated to the financial support for numerous local and national organizations.
